What Is A Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels can consist of alpha hydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acids and beta hydroxy acids. They are categorized as superficial, medium-depth and deep, depending on how far they penetrate your skin. Superficial peels are the lightest and penetrate the upper layer only of the epidermis. These peels are for those without major sunspots, wrinkles or acne and acne scarring. Medium-depth peels are stronger and are ideal for those who have moderate damage to the skin, like age spots, actinic keratosis and freckles. Deep chemical peels are the most aggressive and penetrate the skin to the reticular layer of your skin’s dermis.
Most patients prefer to have a series of chemical peels in order to achieve their skin goals. However, results can typically be seen after just one chemical peel. Our chemical peels can also be combined with laser resurfacing treatments to maximize results.
What Can I Expect From A Chemical Peel?
In preparation of your peel, you should avoid waxing the face, deep exfoliation or any treatments or products that cause dryness five days prior. During your peel, you will likely feel a tingling sensation until the solution neutralizes. The peel can also cause redness that may last up to five days. Deeper peels may produce swelling and redness, which is normal. As your skin sloughs away, it is important to let it do so naturally, rather than peeling it off yourself.
Following your peel, your skin will be photosensitive. As such, daily sunscreen is a must as your skin recovers. A consultation with our medical aesthetic professionals will determine which peel or skin treatment is right for you. Exact aftercare instructions will also be given to you based on the type of treatment you receive.

FAQs
Chemical peel
A chemical peel is a professional skin resurfacing treatment that uses a customized chemical solution to exfoliate the damaged outer layers of your skin and reveal fresher, smoother skin underneath. At Dr. Andrew Lofman’s practice, medical-grade solutions are applied in a controlled way by trained providers to improve tone, texture, and clarity while also stimulating collagen for long-term skin rejuvenation.
Chemical peels can significantly improve the look of acne, mild acne scarring, sun damage, age spots, and uneven pigmentation by speeding up cell turnover and lifting discolored or rough surface skin. They also soften fine lines, wrinkles, and texture irregularities so your skin appears smoother, brighter, and more even overall.
Chemical peels are generally categorized as superficial, medium-depth, or deep, based on how deeply they penetrate and the strength of the ingredients used. Superficial peels gently refresh the outermost layer with minimal downtime, while medium and deep options target more advanced sun damage, scarring, and wrinkles with more dramatic results and longer recovery.
During your consultation, the aesthetic team evaluates your skin type, concerns, medical history, and lifestyle to recommend the safest and most effective peel for you. They balance factors like desired downtime, sensitivity, pigment concerns, and how aggressive you want your results to be, then customize a treatment plan rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
Your skin is first thoroughly cleansed, then a tailored chemical solution is brushed or swabbed onto your skin for a specific amount of time while your provider monitors your comfort and response. You may feel warmth or tingling as the peel works, and once it has reached the desired depth, it is neutralized or removed and followed with soothing, protective skincare.
Light chemical peels typically involve a few days of mild redness, dryness, or flaking that can be managed with gentle skincare and strict sun protection. Medium and deep peels may cause more pronounced peeling, crusting, and redness lasting one to several weeks, and you will be given specific aftercare instructions to support proper healing and results.
Many patients notice a brighter, smoother complexion within about one week of a light peel as the outer layer of dull skin sheds. Deeper peels continue to improve skin quality over several weeks as collagen remodels, and their results can be long-lasting when combined with good skincare and sun protection.
When performed by experienced medical professionals who carefully choose the right peel type and strength, chemical peels can be safely customized for various skin types, including more sensitive or reactive skin. Extra care is taken with darker skin tones to minimize the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation by using appropriate formulations, pretreatment regimens, and conservative strength levels.
Chemical peels can often be part of a comprehensive, non-surgical rejuvenation plan that may include injectables like Botox, dermal fillers, or other skin treatments, such as laser or IPL when appropriate. Your provider will help you sequence and time each procedure safely so your skin can heal properly and your results look natural and balanced.
Before your chemical peel, you should avoid excessive sun exposure, pause certain products like retinoids, and follow a simple pre-treatment skincare routine to prepare your skin. After your peel, you will need to keep your skin moisturized, avoid picking or peeling, use gentle cleansers, and commit to daily broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your new skin and prolong your results.
