When thinking of a breast procedure, it’s likely that breast implants come to mind. Not surprising as more than a quarter of a million were performed in 2018! However, it’s key to gain an understanding on the difference between a breast augmentation (which uses implants) and a breast lift in order to make the right decision for you and your body. Read on for more on this topic.
BREAST IMPLANTS VS. BREAST LIFT
Simply put, a breast augmentation involves the use of a breast implant to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. A breast lift, on the other hand, simply lifts your breast through the removal of excess skin and reshaping of breast tissue to create a firmer and more lifted look.
Some patients need one or the other or some combination of both. But some opt for simply one. If you are looking to gain a larger breast size and add volume if it has been lost, yet you are overall satisfied with where your breasts rest, you may only need a breast augmentation (which will typically provide a small amount of lift on its own).
However, if you are unsatisfied with your droopy breasts and don’t wish to add any extra size or would not like an implant, then a breast lift may be for you.
To determine if you would benefit from a breast lift, you should asses where your nipple and areola are positioned. If your nipple is in a position above the fold of your breast, then a breast lift likely would not be necessary. However, if it is below the fold, then you likely could benefit from a breast lift.
